Nanoscience division

Postgraduate opportunities in the Nanoscience division are available in our two research groups: Biomolecular & Chemical Physics and Semiconductor Spectroscopy & Devices. We are covering the research areas of condensed matter physics, ultrafast chemical physics, nanoscale physics, materials science, and soft condensed matter. Within SUPA, we are part of the Condensed Matter and Materials Physics theme, the Photonics theme, and the Physics & the Life Sciences theme. The Nanoscience division currently has thirteen academic members of staff, an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow, a NERC Research Fellow, eleven research fellows, and 23 PhD students.

Optics Division

The Optics Division comprises two large and internationally active research groups, the Computational Nonlinear and Quantum Optics (CNQO) Group and the Photonics Group. Research in these two groups spans the range of modern optics, with particular emphasis on optics related to or made possible by lasers. The CNQO Group carries out mostly theoretical and computational research in the fields of nonlinear and quantum optics. The Photonics Group is primarily active in experimental research, with activities ranging from the design of new laser and nonlinear optical devices to atom cooling and atom optics. Members of Photonics and CNQO work together on many research projects, allowing the Division to explore, in house, all aspects of a research topic.

Plasmas Division

The Plasmas Division integrates together research on a very wide variety of plasmas. The research is carried out in two research groups, the Atoms,Beams and Plasmas Group (ABP) and the Strathclyde Intense Laser Interaction Studies (SILIS) group.
