International Students Homepage
Welcome to the International Students section of our website.
The Physics Department is based in the heart of Glasgow, the largest and liveliest city in Scotland, a country that boasts both outstanding scientific traditions and natural beauty. We are one of the most successful Departments of Physics in the UK at attracting funds for research and, with nearly 300 students, one of the largest in Scotland. Each year many international students come from all corners of the world to join our department. They enjoy friendly teaching, great sport and recreation facilities and (for those whose first language is not English) a boost to their language skills. The department will award a number of studentships to the most qualified applicants.
Our Integrated Masters, or MSci degrees, normally last for five years and are directly linked to the research interests of the Department. In the first three years of the course you will cover traditional physics topics such as electromagnetism, waves and optics and quantum mechanics, whilst in the final two years you can specialize in advanced topics such as physics at the life-science interface or photonics. A major part of the final two years of study is spent on project work giving you a first hand experience of working on a real scientific problem in a research environment. Depending on your level of physics education, entry is possible into any year up to and including year 4.
The transferable skills that are developed whilst studying towards a physics degree make the students very attractive to employers. With a thriving Hi-Tech sector, there are plenty of opportunities in Scotland for clever and determined people, no matter where they come from. In fact, the majority of our students have well paid jobs waiting for them before they graduate. Some have even gone on to create their own companies.
Our innovative Career Mentoring scheme enables a student to tap into the wealth of industrial and academic experience of our staff to provide our students with opportunities to network with people already working in private companies or in other universities.
We believe that a Physics degree from Strathclyde University is an excellent qualification and can provide you with many opportunities to further your career. Further information for students wishing to come to Strathclyde can be found at http://www.strath.ac.uk/igo/prospective.
